Who… 1 An artist, a journalist, a photographer and two film students living between Barcelona and Santo Domingo with different views, ideas, styles and philosophies. We have come together with a single goal to bring a heart back to Haiti.
What…. 2 Haiti… is a gonzo style documentary that captures the cultural routine of rural Haitian life. Experienced in the first person and presented in the same way, we want to show the honesty of the people we encountered and the impression they made on us.
Where… 3 Our documentary visits many cities on our quest. We star in Santo Domingo and make our way thru the border into Port au Prince and finally settling in Haiti’s cultural capital Jacmel. Jacmel is a small town on the southern coast of Haiti. Their mardi gras is the most popular in the country and have organized their own film festival. We talk to all kinds of rural Haitian folk, from farmers to voodoo priests, from a small girl to a desperate man trying to keep his family fed. We see it’s wonderful hotels and it’s over populated slums, every possible side of Jacmel.
How… 4 Using three video cameras and two photographers, we scoped the local landscape and talked to strangers. Using Jacmel as center point we were able to capture life in many different aspects and in a dynamic light. We listened and did not talk. We asked but weren’t responded. We shot spontaneously and never doubled a shot. We didn’t ask academic experts instead we ask the common people what they think, do, feel and want for themselves and their country.
Why… 5 Haiti is a country full of mystery and rumor with a rich history and deep cultural roots. Everywhere the Haitian people go they work hard and adapt well with society and yet so little is known. So we went to learn and now we want to inspire peoples curiosity.
